Bezold Beauties
Project type
Bezold Effect Pattern Design
Date
February 2023
Created for a Color Theory course at SCAD, Bezold Beauties explores the interaction of color through the Bezold Effect, a phenomenon in which the perceived hue, value, or intensity of a color changes depending on the colors surrounding it. Beginning with a hand-drawn continuous-line illustration inspired by feminine forms and portraiture, I developed a 5×5 composition that was scanned and refined in Adobe Photoshop before being transformed into a mirrored 10×10 design. Each quadrant features a unique background color, allowing viewers to observe how surrounding colors alter the appearance of the figures and visual elements. The work serves as both a study of color perception and a celebration of femininity, beauty, and female empowerment.
